This immersive journey combines cultural exploration with professional learning in the fields of psychology and mental health. Participants begin in Sofia, Bulgaria, exploring the historic capital while gaining insights into community-based care and social inclusion. Visits to the Foundation for Social Change and Inclusion provide firsthand experience of programs supporting underprivileged groups, while guided tours of the city’s landmarks and cultural sites deepen understanding of Bulgaria’s rich social and historical context.
The trip then moves to Veliko Tărnovo, Bulgaria’s medieval capital, where participants engage with daycare centers for children and adults with mental and physical disabilities, taking part in hands-on activities such as art therapy, music therapy, and social engagement exercises. Additional visits to regional hospitals, geriatric centers, and educational institutions, including Veliko Tărnovo University, provide insight into both historical and contemporary approaches to mental health care, rehabilitation, and psychological support in Bulgaria. Cultural experiences in the surrounding towns of Arbanasi, Dryanovo, and Sevlievo, along with scenic explorations of Tsarevets Fortress and Bacho Kiro Cave, allow participants to reflect on the intersection of environment, heritage, and wellbeing.
Crossing into Turkey, the program continues with professional and academic exchanges at Edirne’s Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum, exploring the history of medicine and healthcare practices, and at Uskudar University, a leading institution in psychology and mental health research. Participants also engage with local specialists to learn about Turkey’s mental health system, methodologies, and therapeutic practices. Cultural immersion in Istanbul, including the Princes’ Islands, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, provides a rich backdrop for understanding social, historical, and environmental influences on mental wellbeing.
The trip concludes with a farewell Bosphorus dinner cruise, celebrating the connections, insights, and experiences gained. Throughout the journey, participants not only expand their professional knowledge in psychology and mental health, but also engage meaningfully with communities, healthcare facilities, and cultural heritage, creating a holistic perspective on mental health across two diverse countries.
