Therapy Abroad programs emphasize hands-on skill development in evaluation and treatment. On this trip you will have the chance to:
Thailand, a captivating country in Southeast Asia, is known for its deep cultural heritage, vibrant communities, and commitment to holistic health and well-being. Often referred to as the “Land of Smiles,” Thailand welcomes visitors with its warm hospitality, stunning natural beauty, and dynamic blend of ancient tradition and modern innovation.
At the heart of this experience is Chiang Mai—a culturally rich city nestled in the mountains of northern Thailand. Known for its historic temples, progressive healthcare systems, and artisan traditions, Chiang Mai has become a hub for community-based rehabilitation, inclusive education, and integrative medicine. With a strong emphasis on collaboration and cultural respect, the city offers an ideal setting for aspiring Physical and Occupational Therapists to explore the intersection of global health and culturally responsive care.
As you explore the bustling markets, serene landscapes, and therapeutic settings of Chiang Mai, you'll gain far more than clinical insight—you’ll experience the rhythms, values, and resilience of Thai life in a way that leaves a lasting impression. This immersive journey will expand both your professional worldview and your personal understanding of what it means to care across cultures.
You’ll stay in home stays and hotel accommodations with communal areas for relaxing, meeting rooms for group discussions, and comfortable rooms for resting. Rooms are shared with one other student, featuring private bathrooms and two beds. You’ll have access to Wifi, fresh drinking water, western-style toilets and showers, and on-site or nearby laundry services.
Home stays are typically for 2-3 nights. Ban Pong Huay Lan offers students an opportunity to engage with rural Thailand through a community-based tourism initiative that celebrates local traditions while creating sustainable economic opportunities. Rather than observing culture as spectators, students are welcomed into a community that has intentionally developed tourism as a way to preserve cultural heritage, strengthen local livelihoods, and share Thai traditions on its own terms. Through hands-on experiences alongside community members—including traditional crafts, cooking, dessert making and everyday cultural practices—students gain a deeper understanding of Thai values as well as learn directly from community members. These activities will give a small window into the ways communities balance cultural preservation and economic resilience in a modernizing world.
Meals will include a mix of Thai and Western cuisine—rice, curries, noodles, spicy salads, fried foods, fresh vegetables, and exotic fruits. We guarantee plenty of delicious food and can cater to dietary needs if requested in advance. An amazing place with rich history, great food, and the friendliest people.
Thailand’s scenic beauty and the warmth of its people will quickly make you feel at home!
The total program cost does not include international airfare. Therapy Abroad organizes a chaperoned flight. You can find out more information about flights and how they work here. Most students choose to travel on the chaperoned flight, though we have flexibility for those who cannot or choose not to.
In addition to hands-on work, you will have the chance to enjoy a variety of cultural and adventure activities, including hiking (or rock climbing), Thai cooking classes, and a visit to an elephant sanctuary. These activities provide a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Thai culture while earning volunteer hours and gaining valuable experience.
With the exception of international airfare, our trips are fully inclusive—there are no hidden costs or optional add-ons. Tuition covers all activities, materials, meals, housing, and transportation during the program, so students can focus on learning and experiencing their trip without worrying about extra expenses.
Refund percentages include the non-refundable deposit. The $1,000 deposit is non-refundable, but it can be transferred to a different program (for the same person only). In the event of a cancellation, your deposit will be applied toward any tuition owed. Any remaining balance from the deposit will be held as a credit for a future Therapy Abroad trip.
Safety is our top priority, and we take a hands-on approach to ensure every aspect of your experience is secure. Every location, accommodation, and activity is personally vetted by Therapy Abroad directors.
From departure to return, we provide a seamless, worry-free experience. You’ll always be part of a group led by experienced facilitators—never outsourced staff. Our team ensures access to medical care, clean food and water, and reliable communication at all times.

Students arrive at Chiang Mai International Airport and are welcomed by Therapy Abroad's Thai partner Progression staff. The afternoon includes a relaxed orientation where students meet their peers, facilitators, and Clinical Supervisors, and are introduced to the program expectations and cultural nuances of Thailand.
Students will then participate in a cultural session exploring Thai social values and the healthcare system. This is important to help students understand the cultural context of rehabilitation in Thailand and how it may differ from their home country, the United States.
Students spend the day in the Lanna community of Ban Pong, learning about local traditions through cultural activities and Northern Thai cooking.
Students participate in an interactive session led by local rehabilitation professionals, introducing disability services and occupational therapy within the Thai context. The session provides a practical framework for understanding person-centred care in the rehabilitation settings they will visit throughout the program.
Students visit the Dulabhatorn Foundation to observe and engage with individuals with complex physical and developmental disabilities. They gain insight into how therapists work with families and other professionals to promote patients' meaningful engagement in everyday life.
Building on the previous day's experience, students continue observing rehabilitation services across a variety of programs. They explore how activity adaptation and environmental modifications are used in the role of occupational therapy and physical therapy.
Students visit an ethical elephant sanctuary to learn about conservation and long-term animal welfare. While distinct from clinical practice, the experience encourages students to reflect on broader rehabilitation concepts. It also provides an opportunity to appreciate the cultural significance of elephants within Thai society.
Students visit the Prostheses Foundation to observe the design and fitting of prosthetic devices. Through discussions with rehabilitation professionals, they gain an understanding of how assistive technology helps individuals return to meaningful daily activities.
Students join a community-based children's program that promotes inclusive play and participation. Working alongside local facilitators, they observe how recreational activities can support children's physical, cognitive, and social development within their community.
Students visit Hope Home and Nong Phueng Community to explore how rehabilitation extends beyond clinical settings into everyday life. Through conversations with residents and caregivers, they gain a deeper understanding of how cultural and social factors influence care.
Students observe pediatric rehabilitation services at RICD before visiting Progression Vertical Climbing Gym to learn about adaptive recreation and therapeutic climbing.
The Rajanagarindra Institute of Child Development (RICD) is a leading pediatric rehabilitation center operated by Thailand's Ministry of Public Health. The institute provides interdisciplinary assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for children with developmental disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, ADHD, and developmental delays. RICD also serves as a national leader in research, professional training, and community outreach, promoting innovative, evidence-based care for children and their families throughout Thailand.
Today students head to Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Adventures for an immersive experience in adaptive climbing. They work one-on-one with children and local professionals, helping participants build confidence and overcome physical challenges through therapeutic climbing activities. This hands-on day reinforces principles of adaptive physical therapy, support strategies, and motivation. After lunch, students participate in a final group reflection session to synthesize their learning.
Students pack, say their goodbyes, and head to the Chiang Mai International Airport for their flights home. They leave not only with new skills and international observation hours, but with new friendships, global perspective, and deeper clarity about their futures in PT and OT.
