About this trip

Set against the stunning backdrop of Chiang Mai—Thailand’s cultural and healthcare capital—this 13-day program offers a truly immersive experience for students in Physical and Occupational Therapy. Known for its welcoming communities, innovative rehabilitation centers, and deep-rooted traditions, Chiang Mai provides an incredible setting to explore the intersection of therapy, culture, and global health.

Throughout the program, you’ll engage in meaningful work alongside Thai PTs and OTs in settings ranging from pediatric therapy clinics and inclusive schools to community health organizations and rehab hospitals. You’ll gain first-hand exposure to how cultural context and community values shape treatment approaches, while developing a deep understanding of the global landscape of rehabilitative care.

This program is designed for students who want more than observation—they want context, mentorship, and real-world perspective. It’s especially valuable for those preparing for graduate school: the insight, international experience, and professional development you’ll gain here will help your application stand out in a competitive field. You'll return with a broader worldview, meaningful stories to tell, and a clearer sense of your own clinical path.

About Thailand & Chiang Mai

Thailand, a captivating country in Southeast Asia, is known for its deep cultural heritage, vibrant communities, and commitment to holistic health and well-being. Often referred to as the “Land of Smiles,” Thailand welcomes visitors with its warm hospitality, stunning natural beauty, and dynamic blend of ancient tradition and modern innovation.

At the heart of this experience is Chiang Mai—a culturally rich city nestled in the mountains of northern Thailand. Known for its historic temples, progressive healthcare systems, and artisan traditions, Chiang Mai has become a hub for community-based rehabilitation, inclusive education, and integrative medicine. With a strong emphasis on collaboration and cultural respect, the city offers an ideal setting for aspiring Physical and Occupational Therapists to explore the intersection of global health and culturally responsive care.

As you explore the bustling markets, serene landscapes, and therapeutic settings of Chiang Mai, you'll gain far more than clinical insight—you’ll experience the rhythms, values, and resilience of Thai life in a way that leaves a lasting impression. This immersive journey will expand both your professional worldview and your personal understanding of what it means to care across cultures.

Accommodations

An amazing place with rich history, great food, and the friendliest people. You’ll stay in boutique hotel accommodations with communal areas for relaxing, meeting rooms for group discussions, and comfortable rooms for resting. Rooms are shared with one other student, featuring private bathrooms and two beds. You’ll have access to Wifi, fresh drinking water, western-style toilets and showers, and on-site or nearby laundry services. Meals will include a mix of Thai and Western cuisine—rice, curries, noodles, spicy salads, fried foods, fresh vegetables, and exotic fruits. We guarantee plenty of delicious food and can cater to dietary needs if requested in advance. Thailand’s scenic beauty and the warmth of its people will quickly make you feel at home!

Airfare & Group Flights

The total program cost does not include international airfare. Therapy Abroad organizes group flight itineraries from: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Over 95% of students choose the group flight option. Group flights are arranged as a convenience to students and their families. Once you’re accepted to a program, you’ll automatically be added to the group flight list. Therapy Abroad staff will manage your reservation from start to finish, providing peace of mind and logistical support every step of the way. Traveling on the group flight is highly recommended, as it ensures:

  • A smooth and coordinated arrival and departure
  • Support from Therapy Abroad staff at departure and arrival airports
  • The opportunity to meet your fellow participants before the program begins
Extra assistance in case of flight delays or travel disruptions

If you do not wish to take the group flight, you will have to email us to let us know. We understand that in some cases, students may prefer to arrange their own travel—whether to use frequent flyer miles, access a family discount, or join the program after group seats are full. While we’re happy to assist, we strongly encourage students to fly with the group for convenience and safety.

If a group flight is available and you opt to book your own flights, a $300 administrative fee applies ($150 each way). This fee covers private transportation to/from the airport and a Therapy Abroad staff member for airport transfers. If, in the rare occurrence, a group flight is not available, we will provide detailed arrival/departure windows and help you select the best available itinerary.

Excursions & Adventure Activities

In addition to hands-on work, you will have the chance to enjoy a variety of cultural and adventure activities, including hiking (or rock climbing), Thai cooking classes, and a visit to an elephant sanctuary. These activities provide a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Thai culture while earning volunteer hours and gaining valuable experience.

Payments

With the exception of international airfare, our trips are fully inclusive—there are no hidden costs or optional add-ons.
